Fiona & James Countryside Wedding

A relaxed and heartfelt wedding at The Parsonage in Escrick, surrounded by family, friends and a touch of Fawlty Towers!

When people think about getting married in York, it’s easy to picture the historic city centre, its ancient streets and iconic buildings. But some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful wedding venues can be found just a short drive from the city, surrounded by open countryside, picturesque villages and beautiful Yorkshire landscapes.

The Parsonage in Escrick is one of those venues. Situated on the outskirts of York, it provides a wonderful setting for couples looking for something a little away from the hustle and bustle of the city, while still being close enough to enjoy everything York has to offer. Fiona and James chose The Parsonage for their celebrations, with their wedding ceremony taking place at the church next door before everyone headed across to the venue to continue the celebrations.

A short but very sweet morning

The morning of a wedding doesn’t always need to be hours of photographs. Sometimes, the simplest moments are the most meaningful.

Fiona’s preparations were short but very sweet. Before heading off to the ceremony, there was time for a little celebration with her mum and auntie. I even got involved by helping Fiona open the bottle of bubbly so the three of them could enjoy a drink together before the wedding.

There was also a particularly lovely moment when Fiona gave her mum a gift. These are the sorts of moments I love capturing, personal, genuine and completely unscripted.

It wasn’t about creating lots of staged photographs. It was simply about documenting a few precious moments between Fiona, her mum and her auntie before the day really got underway.

A beautiful church ceremony in Escrick

Just next door to The Parsonage is the beautiful church in Escrick, where Fiona and James chose to say their vows.

Being able to have the ceremony so close to the reception venue made the day flow beautifully. Guests could enjoy the ceremony before making their way over to The Parsonage for the celebrations afterwards.

As always, my approach during the ceremony was to stay as unobtrusive as possible. Weddings are about being present in the moment, and my job is to quietly capture those emotions as they happen, from the anticipation before the ceremony to the smiles, laughter and emotion once Fiona and James were officially married.

Celebrating with family and friends

After the ceremony, it was time to celebrate!

Fiona and James were surrounded by their friends and family as everyone gathered at The Parsonage. The atmosphere was relaxed and full of the excitement that comes with finally being able to let the celebrations begin.

One of the things that made their reception particularly personal was the way they had styled the room.

Rather than opting for a traditional wedding theme, the couple decided to bring one of James’ favourite television programmes into their wedding day — Fawlty Towers.

The reception room had been styled around the classic British comedy, adding a brilliant personal touch to the celebrations and giving their guests plenty to talk about.

A Fawlty Towers wedding!

It’s always fantastic when couples bring their personalities and interests into their wedding day, and Fiona and James certainly did that.

The Fawlty Towers theme wasn’t simply a decoration; it was a reflection of James’ favourite TV programme and gave the reception its own unique character.

From the styling of the room to the little details that guests could discover throughout the reception, it was clear that this was a wedding that was about Fiona and James, rather than simply following a traditional wedding formula.

As a photographer, these personal touches are brilliant to photograph because they help tell the story of the couple. Years from now, the photographs won’t just remind Fiona and James of what their wedding looked like — they’ll remind them of the things they loved and the people who shared the day with them.

The little moments that made the day

For me, wedding photography isn’t just about the big moments.

Of course, the ceremony, confetti and celebrations are important, but it’s often the smaller moments that become some of the most treasured photographs.

Fiona opening the bubbly with her mum and auntie. Giving her mum a special gift. The anticipation before walking into the church. Friends and family enjoying the reception together. The little reactions to the Fawlty Towers styling.

These moments might only last a few seconds, but together they tell the complete story of a wedding day.

My approach is to give couples gentle direction when they need it, while allowing the rest of the day to happen naturally. There’s no need to spend your wedding day constantly posing for photographs. Instead, I want you to enjoy yourselves while I capture the genuine moments happening around you.

A beautiful wedding just outside York

Fiona and James’ wedding was a brilliant example of why I love photographing weddings around York and the surrounding Yorkshire countryside.

From the intimate preparations to the beautiful church ceremony in Escrick and the wonderfully personal Fawlty Towers-inspired reception at The Parsonage, their wedding was filled with personality, emotion and plenty of memorable moments.

It was relaxed, personal and completely them — which, in my opinion, is exactly what a wedding should be.

Congratulations, Fiona & James

It was an absolute pleasure to be part of Fiona and James’ wedding at The Parsonage in Escrick. Thank you both for allowing me to capture such a special day and for making me feel so welcome. From the quiet moments before the ceremony to the laughter and celebrations with your family and friends, it was a fantastic day to photograph. I hope your photographs bring back all those memories for many years to come.
